Phillies Designate Dustin McGowan for Assignment

The Philadelphia Phillies have designated righty Dustin McGowan for assignment and have called lefty Jake Diekmann from Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

McGowan, 33, posted a 6.94 ERA over 23 1/3 innings for the Phillies this season. This is the second time that he’s been designated this season and will have the option to elect free agency this time.

Diekmann, 28, was once a promising bullpen arm for Philadelphia. He has posted a 6.75 ERA over the 21 1/3 innings. He will most likely join Ken Giles as the setup man for closer Jonathan Papelbon.
