The Oklahoma Sooners announced on Monday that Baker Mayfield will be the starting quarterback for them this season.
Mayfield walked-on at Texas Tech in 2013 and started for the Red Raiders that season, but decided to transfer to Oklahoma at the end of the year. He beat out last year’s starter Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas to start week 1 against Akron.
Knight will be Mayfield’s backup, while Thomas will serve as the number three guy on the depth chart.
Oklahoma changed their offensive scheme to an up-tempo, spread offense under new offensive coordinator Lincoln Riley. Coaches have been said that Mayfield has the leadership qualities to lead the team this season.
Mayfield threw for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2013.
