Who is the best one loss team remaining in college football? Coming into this past weekend there was 13 one loss teams, after this weekend there are nine. The biggest surprise of the four losses was Auburn. The Tigers got upset by Texas A&M at home and are most likely out of the playoff race.
Auburn was coming off a big win over Ole Miss and you knew they might have a letdown. The SEC West has beat each other up this season and now there is only two teams with a shot at the playoffs. Alabama is the top one loss team in the SEC, with Mississippi State being undefeated. Those two teams play each other this weekend and an Alabama win will give the SEC two one loss teams. The Crimson Tide are coming off a miracle win against LSU, that took a last second field goal to tie the game at 13. They would go onto win in overtime 20-13. The Crimson Tide have the second best scoring defense in the country and they keep improving. Alabama is the top one loss team in my opinion. They still have to play Auburn and Mississippi State, so they will have a tough time winning out. Those two games are at home, where they are a completely different team and I fully expect them to win both games. Alabama is the top one loss team in my opinion.
TCU is also a very good one loss team. They are coming off an impressive win over Kansas State, 41-20. The Horned Frogs have a very good quarterback in Tervone Boykin and I think he’s the Heisman front runner. The Big 12 has another one loss team in the Baylor Bears. TCU only loss came to Baylor and it took one of the best comebacks I’ve ever seen. Baylor only loss came to West Virginia, who just lost to Texas. The Big 12 has shocked me with how good they really are this season. I think they are now the second best conference in college football. TCU and Baylor are both very good teams, but I think that TCU is the better team. I know they lost to Baylor, but TCU did control that game until the last few minutes. The Horned Frogs have been playing great football lately and have been dominating their opponents.
Ohio State is coming off a key victory over Michigan State, who was a one loss team until this game. Ohio State offense has been dominant, since their lose to Virginia Tech. Since that lose, they have only scored under 49 points once against Penn State. Ohio State freshman quarterback J.T. Barrett has been amazing this season, with his only bad game coming against Virginia Tech. Barrett has 27 touchdown passes this season, with eight rushing touchdowns. The Buckeyes still have games against Minnesota, Indiana and Michigan, with Minnesota being their only threat left during the regular season. Ohio State could play Nebraska in the Big Ten championship, if the Cornhuskers win out. I think the Buckeyes are a good team, but their strength of schedule is to weak in my opinion.
The Buckeyes aren’t the only one loss team in the Big Ten, with Nebraska still sitting there with one loss. The Cornhuskers only loss came at the hands of Michigan State, who just beat Ohio State. Nebraska hasn’t impressed me at all this season and I don’t think they will be in this conversation next week. They have to play at Wisconsin this week, with Minnesota and Iowa to follow. Nebraska will have to beat Wisconsin this week, to prove that they are worthy of a higher ranking.
The only one loss team that is not in a power five conference is Colorado State. The Rams are coached by former Alabama offensive coordinator Jim McElwain. McElwain has done a great job of turning this program around. The Rams went 3-9 the year before McElwain arrived and they’ve improved every season. Colorado State is also led by a former Alabama running back Dee Hart. Hart struggled with injuries at Alabama, but has been great this season with 909 yards and 11 touchdowns. Senior quarterback Garrett Grayson has been phenomenal this season. Grayson has thrown for 3,024 yards and 26 touchdowns. The Rams have two games left and possibly another one with their conference championship game. They still play New Mexico and Air Force, with Air Force having the better chance to knock them off. Colorado State best win is against Boston College and I don’t think that is enough to rank them any higher than last.
Another team no one is talking about is Duke. The Blue Devils still have three games left, against Virginia Tech, North Carolina, and Wake Forest. Duke has relied on their offense the last few season, but this season their defense has really came thru for them. They are currently allowing 18.2 points per game, which is 11th in the country. If Duke wins out they will have a shot at Florida State and a chance to prove themselves to the nation. I think that Duke is a top 15 team, with their only loss coming to a much improved Miami (FL) team. The ACC is too weak this year, but I still have Duke seventh in my rankings.
Arizona State is coming off a blowout over Notre Dame. The Sun Devils forced five Notre Dame turnovers, which included intercepting Everett Golson four times. The only loss for Arizona State came at against UCLA, earlier this season. I think this loss will come back to haunt them, especially with the game being at home. The Sun Devils still have to play Oregon State, Washington State, and Arizona. If they win out they will more than likely play Oregon. If they win out you have to think their in the playoffs. I think that the Sun Devils are a very good team, but they’re definitely not the top one loss team.
Oregon should go into the Pac-12 championship game with one loss. The Ducks have two games left, against Colorado and Oregon State. Oregon only loss came to Arizona at home, but Arizona is now a top-25 team and that will help the Ducks in the long run. Oregon is averaging 46 points per game, which is fourth in the country. They’ve scored under 38 points once this season and they lost that game. As long as they can score they will win. I have the Ducks as my third best one loss team, but it was close between TCU.
My Rankings of the top one loss teams:
- Alabama (8-1)
- TCU (8-1)
- Oregon (9-1)
- Arizona State (8-1)
- Ohio State (8-1)
- Baylor (8-1)
- Duke (8-1)
- Nebraska (8-1)
- Colorado State (9-1)
