Blake Rutherford’s Scouting Report

Rutherford has an excellent swing with a line drive stroke and has the ability to hit to all fields. He also has great bat speed to go with a sound approach at the plate. Rutherford has the potential to be a five-tool player in the future, with his arm and power still needing to develop.

Strengths

  • Plus potential contact skills
  • Plus potential power
  • Above average runner
  • Good defender in the outfield
  • Solid athlete

Weaknesses

  • He’s already 19 and he should be further along in his development and some scouts think he should have dominated more than he did
  • Needs to add muscle

Where could Rutherford end up in the draft?

Mickey Moniak has climbed ahead of Rutherford as the best high-school outfield prospect in his year’s draft and Rutherford has slipped down due to that. Rutherford could be an option for the Mariners at 11, with the Rays at 13 being the lowest he could go. If I had to guess right now, I would say that Tampa Bay will be where Rutherford ends up.
