The Toronto Blue Jays have acquired Cliff Pennington from the Arizona Diamondbacks, according to Chris Cotillo of SB Nation. Robert Murray of Baseball Essential was the first to report that a deal was in the works. The D-Backs will receive Dawel Lugo and cash in return. They have also called up Jamie Romak.
Pennington, 31, can play all over the infield and will bring more depth to the Blue Jays bench. He’s hitting .237/.314/.281 with one homer and 10 RBIs in 157 plate appearances. The former first-round pick will hit free agency after this year.
