Braves to Sign Alberto Callaspo

The Atlanta Braves have agreed to a deal with third baseman Alberto Callaspo, pending a physical.

This might be a sign that the Braves are about to trade Chris Johnson, who’s a liability on defense and is making $4.75 million a year. Callaspo could also platoon with Johnson at third, but I think Callaspo will be used off the bench, if Johnson is still a Brave on opening day. Atlanta may plan on using Callaspo at second, until Jose Peraza is ready to be called up, which I expect to happen sometime this season.

Alberto Callaspo is a switch hitter, who hit .223 in Oakland last season, so he will fit right in. Callaspo is a nice addition to a bench that struggled for the most part last season.

Callaspo is a career .267 hitter and he doesn’t strike out very often, he’s also a decent fielder that can play multiple positions.

I think this is a good move by the Braves as long as Callaspo hits like he did in 2013. Atlanta gets a very versatile player that can play multiple positions.
