On this day in 2011, the Green Bay Packers won their first Super Bowl since 1996, beating the Pittsburgh Steelers 31-25. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers threw for 304 yards on 24 completions and three touchdowns, winning the MVP.
On this day in 1988, Chicago Bulls star Michael Jordan won the Nestle Crunch Slam Dunk contest, defending his crown in front of his hometown. Jordan got a perfect score on his last dunk, defeating the great Dominique Wilkins.
On this day in 1921, the New York Yankees announced the purchase of a ten-acre plot of land for $675,000 ($8,927,195.53 in 2014), from the estate of William Waldorf Astor. The land would be the future site of Yankee Stadium.
