Fantasy Football: Week 1 waiver wire pickups

Week 1 was truly the weekend of the tight end. I couldn’t think of a funny “tight end” joke but I know your dirty minds went there. Tight ends were the most perplexing position going into fantasy drafts because it seemed the scarcity was overwhelming. But they truly impressed the fantasy community this week. I hate to overreact to one game but Travis Kelce is looking more and more like Rob Gronk-Smash. Tyler Eifert is going to be good all year with so much emphasis being placed on Jeremy Hill and A.J. Green. Last week I sent out a “pick these guys before they land on the waiver wire list”. Now I’ll let you in on the hottest waiver wire pick-ups of the week.

#1 QB Waiver wire pick is: Carson Palmer (65% owned)

Was he on fire or was he on fire? I was preaching don’t pick a quarterback early and roll with Palmer and Bradford all offseason. If you took my advice and have these two on the same team that’s like having the two henchmen Vincent and Jules on your payroll. “Do you know what they call a Quarter Pounder in Paris? Carson Palmer blazed the Saints for 307 yards and 3 touchdowns. His weapons are the real deal and will give defenses hell all season, as long as Pom-Pom Palmer can stay healthy.

Other waiver-wire possibilities: Marcus Mariotta, Alex Smith

#1 RB Waiver wire pick is: Danny Woodhead (49% owned)

I don’t know how many times I have to tell you guys that Woody is kind of a big deal. He has many leather bound books and his apartment smells of rich mahogany (Anchorman).  Between him and Darren Sproles, I can’t tell who’s more elusive. The only reason why Darren isn’t number one on this list is because he shares carries with two other backs. Danny Woodhead will be a great PPR flex play weekly. He only had 42 yards rushing but he came away with two touchdowns. Phillip Rivers is more comfortable with Woody in the red zone, so he’s not only taking all the passing downs but is utilized as the goal line back!

Other waiver wire possibilities: Darren Sproles, Lance Dunbar, Bishop Sankey, Benny Cunningham

#1 WR Waiver Wire pick is: Terrance Williams (58% owned)

If you believe Dez Bryant will only be out for 4 weeks, I have a beach to sell you in Coney Island. I couldn’t understand how the doctors had an estimated time of return before he was even diagnosed. Terrance Williams had a decent game and I think he’s the main beneficiary of the Dez injury going forward. The Cowboys receivers will all get an uptick on targets and catches but Williams becomes the #1 WR with Tony Romo at the helm in which he led the league in pass percentage last season. Most experts might say James Jones is the #1 waiver wire addition but he only had 4 targets so temper expectations to Mr. “All I do is score touchdowns”. Rogers and Jones have great rapport but I think his scoring might become inconsistent in weeks to come.

Other waiver wire possibilities: Kendall Wright, James Jones, Donte Moncrief had 10 targets and a td before Hilton left the game!

#1 TE Waiver wire pick up is: Tyler Eifert (86% owned)

Eifert grabbed nine receptions on 12 targets, adding 104 yards and two touchdowns. He should have been owned in most leagues but he was so far down the ADP list during drafts, that he might be awaiting your claim on the waiver wire. Go back and check twice to ensure he’s not available!

Other waiver wire possibilities: Austin Sefarian-Jenkins, Ladarius Green, Heath Miller, Jordan Reed-do not play Reed this week if you have better options because the Rams are arguably the best team defending tight ends.
