Seattle Mariners pitcher Hisashi Iwakuma no-hit the Baltimore Orioles on Wednesday at Safeco Field in Seattle. It was the fourth no-hitter of the 2015 season and the fifth in Mariners team history, with the last coming by Felix Hernandez in 2012. The National League had 12 straight no-hitters with the last American League no-no belonging to Hernandez.
Iwakuma joins Randy Johnson, Chris Bosio and Hernandez as the only Mariners starters to throw a no-no. Their other no-hitter was started by Kevin Millwood with the bullpen taking over in the seventh.
The Japanese righty walked three batters and struck out seven and threw 116 pitches in the game. The Mariners defeated the Orioles 3-0.
This was definitely a bright spot in a tough season for the Mariners, who were thought to be shopping Iwakuma at the trade deadline. Seattle now has a record of 54-61 and set 7.5 games out of the AL West and 6.5 out of the Wild Card race.
