Jason Groome’s Scouting Report

Groome is probably the best prospect in this year’s draft, but that may not guarantee him the number one selection. He’s a hard throwing lefty with a smooth and repeatable delivery. His fastball is already plus and his nasty curveball and changeup both have plus potential. Groome has the potential to be a number one starter with his three plus potential pitches and good command of those pitches.

Strengths

  • Fastball
  • Ideal Frame
  • Nasty Curveball
  • Ace Potential
  • Smooth delivery

Weaknesses

  • Could be anywhere from four to six years away from being ready for major league action
  • Needs to throw his changeup more if he wants it to be a plus pitch in the future

Pitches
Fastball: 94-97 MPH
Changeup: MPH
Curveball:  75-78 MPH

Where could Groome end up in the draft?

It looks like the Phillies will take A.J. Puk and the Reds could go with either Nick Senzel or Kyle Lewis, which makes the Braves at three a possibility. Atlanta is stacking pitching prospects, but they’re still searching for their future ace and Groome could be a candidate for that position. The Braves may decide to take Lewis, which would open the door for the Rockies or Brewers. I don’t see Groome slipping past Oakland at six.
