Michael Matuella’s Scouting Report

Matuella is an excellent pitcher and student, and was almost a lock to go top-3 in the draft until he went down with a ulnar collateral ligament tear. The injury will require him to get Tommy John Surgery. He has struggled with injures in his career at Duke, missing most of his sophomore season with an oblique strain. Matuella has the size and stuff to go in the first-round, but the injury will scare some teams away. He has a great 2-seam fastball that has some ridiculous sink to it. He also features a 12-6 curveball, a plus potential slider and a dominant looking changeup. There has been some questions about Matuella being able to take on a starting pitcher’s workload at the big league level. He has only started 23 games in his three-year college career. Matuella has the stuff to be a future ace for any big league team, but first he will have to stay healthy and prove he can pitch for a full season.
