On this day in 1941, Joe DiMaggio of the New York Yankees broke George Sisler American League record of by hitting safely for his 42nd straight game.  Sisler had set the record of 41 in 1922.

On this day in 1990, Oakland A’s pitcher Dave Stewart and Los Angeles Dodgers pitcher Fernando Valenzuela each threw no-hitters.  It was the first time in major league history that two pitchers threw a no-hitter on the same day.

On this day in 2003, Oakland Athletics outfielder Eric Byrnes hit for the cycle.

On this day in 2004, Arizona Diamondbacks pitcher Randy Johnson recorded his 4,000th career strikeout.

On this day in 2004, the Orlando Magic traded Tracy McGrady, Juwan Howard, Reece Gaines and Tyronn Lue to the Houston Rockets in exchange for Steve Francis, Kelvin Cato and Cutting Mobley.
