On this day in 1996, Atlanta Hawks head coach Lenny Wilkens became the first NBA coach ever to reach 1,000 victories in a 74-68 win over the Cleveland Cavaliers.

On this day in 1998, Miami Heat head coach Pat Riley became the fifth NBA coach to win 900 career games in a 85-84 victory over the New Jersey Nets.

MLB

On this day in 1967, Major League Baseball Commissioner General William Eckert approved the BBWAA’s plan to pick a Cy Young Award winner from both the National League and the American League.  The award had been given to the best pitcher in all of baseball from 1956 to 1966.

On this day in 2012, St. Louis Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina signed a $75 million, five-year extension with the team.  The deal includes a $15 million option for 2018.
