On this day in 1965, Boston Celtics center Bill Russell pulled down 49 rebounds, leading the Celtics to a 112-100 win over the Detroit Pistons. The 49 rebounds was the third-highest in a single game in NBA history.

On this day in 2010, the Colorado Rockies and Todd Helton agreed to a $9.9 million, two-year contract extension that would make the Helton the Rockies first baseman through the 2013 season. Helton would end up retiring after the 2013 season, playing every season of his career in Colorado.
