NBA

On this day in 1953, Boston Celtics point guard Bob Cousy scored 50 points, with 25 of those coming in overtime, as the Celtics beat the Syracuse Nationals 111-105 in four overtimes.  The win eliminated the Nationals from the Eastern Division Semi Finals.  Cousy made 30 free throw attempts, which in an NBA playoff record.

MLB

On this day in 1908, the Detroit Tigers signed future Hall of Fame outfielder Ty Cobb for $4,000, with a $800 bonus if he hits over .300, which he would achieve.

NHL

On this day in 1994, Los Angeles centre Wayne Gretzky tied Gordie Howe’s NHL record of 801 goals.

College Baseball

On this day in 1975, Georgia Tech beat Earlham 41-0, setting the NCAA record for the largest margin of victory.
