On this day in 1996, Utah Jazz point guard John Stockton became the first player in NBA history to reach 11,000 career assists. He achieved the milestone by collecting 11 assists in a 110-87 Jazz victory over the Phoenix Suns.

On this day in 2004, commissioner Bud Selig announced that every team will celebrate “Jackie Robinson’s Day” on April 15 at every ballpark. April 15 is the anniversary of Robinson’s debut when he became the first African American player in the majors. His number 42 was retired for all time at Shea Stadium in 1997.
