On  this day in 1914, George Davis of the Braves no-hit the Phillies, 7-0.

On this day in 1965, Los Angeles Dodgers lefty Sandy Koufax threw a perfect game against the Chicago Cubs.

On this day in 1987, Houston Astros right Nolan Ryan struck out his 4,500 batter.

On  this day in 1992, Robin Yount of the Milwaukee Brewers recorded his 3,000th career hit, becoming the 17th player to achieve the feat.

On this day in 2002, Randy Johnson recorded his 300th strikeout of the season, it was the fifth straight time that the southpaw had reached the mark.

On this day in 2010, Ichiro Suzuki recorded his 200th hit of the season.  It was the 10th straight time that the outfielder had reached the mark, becoming the first player in major league history to do so.

On this day in 1984, Chicago Bears running back Walter Payton broke Jim Brown‘s combined yardage record at 15,517 yards.

On this day in 1971, Gordie Howe of the Detroit Red Wings retired from the NHL.
