The San Diego Padres have optioned infielder Jedd Gyorko to Triple-A El Paso. The 26-year old has struggled this season and has seen a decline in his playing time. He was hitting .210 with two homers and 11 RBIs. The one bright sport for Gyorko was his defense this season.
I’m surprised that the Padres sent him down since he’s just in the second year of his six year, $35 million extension the team signed him to last season. The deal came with a $13 million option for the 2020 season and a $1 million buyout.
San Diego has seen plenty of production out of Cory Spangenberg and Yangervis Solarte at second. I can guarantee you that the Padres are regretting that extension right now.
