The Pittsburgh Pirates have acquired third baseman Aramis Ramirez from the Milwaukee Brewers, according to Craig Calcaterra of NBCSports. The Brewers will receive right-handed pitcher Yhonathan Barrios.
Ramirez, 37, is in the last year of his contract and is still owed just under $6 million. The three-time All-Star is hitting a slash of .247/.295/.430 with 11 homers and 42 RBIs in 302 plate appearances this season. Pittsburgh has a need at third base after losing both Josh Harrison and Jordy Mercer to injuries that will force each player to miss the next six weeks.
Jung Ho Kang will most likely be the full-time shortstop, with Ramirez playing everyday at third base.
Barrios, 23, is a very athletic pitcher that has minor league experience at third base and shortstop. He’s put up an ERA of 2.68 over 40 1/3 innings in Double-A and Triple-A this year.
