The Boston Red Sox have acquired righty John Cornely from the Atlanta Braves for cash considerations. The Braves designated Cornely for assignment yesterday.
The 26-year-old pitched just one inning for Atlanta, giving up four runs on three hits. He has been a much better pitcher in the minors, posting a career ERA of 2.94 ERA with a 12.1 strikeout per 9 inning rate.
The Red Sox hope that Cornely can contribute as the team ranks 18th in reliever ERA.
