The Boston Red Sox have claimed Juan Francisco off waivers fro the Toronto Blue Jays. Francisco hit .220 with 16 homers and 43 RBIs last season. He will definitely be a good bat off the bench for Boston. He has played for four teams Cincinnati, Atlanta, Milwaukee, and Toronto.
I’ve always thought that Francisco was a good hitter, but just a little wild, which keep him from hitting for a good average. He will bring the Red Sox an extra 10 to 15 homers next season.
Juan Francisco is not the greatest of fielders and I wonder if the Red Sox are looking for a DH to replace David Ortiz, who is 39, after he retires.
Francisco is arbitration eligible and is expected to earn around 2.2 million according to MLB Trade Rumors, next season. If Francisco can live up to his potential, than that would be money well spent, but I truly doubt that he will live up to his potential.
I wonder if this move is a sign that Pablo Sandoval declined Boston’s offer. I don’t see why the Red Sox would take on two slow players, that swing at everything.
