Kansas City Royals pitcher Jason Vargas has a torn UCL in his left arm and will require Tommy John Surgery, according to Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports. The lefty will miss the rest of the season and won’t likely return until the end of 2016 or the start the 2017 season.

Vargas, 32, posted a 3.98 ERA in nine starts with a record of 5-2. The Royals still have control of Vargas for two more seasons, and owe hime $8.5 million in 2016 and $8 million in 2017.
Kansas City has also called up Yordano Ventura to take his roster spot. The 24-year-old had just been demoted after struggling for the most part in the first half of the season.
