The Tampa Bay Rays have designated reliever Ernesto Frieri for assignment, according to Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times.
The 29-year-old signed a one-year, $800K contract with Tampa Bay this winter. Frieri was once considered one of the best relievers in the game but the past two seasons have faired well for the righty. He posted a 4.63 ERA in 23 1/3 innings for the Rays this season.
Frieri has seen a dip in velocity the past few seasons and that could be the main cause of his struggles.
I expect Frieri to have a new team in the next few days. Possible destinations include the Braves, Athletics, Padres, Rangers, Cubs, Twins, Mariners and Red Sox.
