Tayo Ogedengbe is a British basketball player, and current captain of the Surrey Scorchers in the British Basketball League.
After being a professional basketball player for over a decade, Ogedengbe is all but familiar with the ‘off season’, the summer months where athletes around the world work on their craft, improve their skills, and get in to shape for the new season.
As a veteran and captain of the Scorchers, Tayo has to lead by example. I asked the 30 year old how he has been preparing for the upcoming campaign, and if his approach to the off season has changed over the years:
“This off season has been different to any other. I have really pushed myself hard this off season to get my body and my skills to be the best they can be”
“Normally I would compete a lot, have a lot of tournaments and scrimmages, but I really just focused on my skill level and getting my body strong and ready for the new season”
Tayo has worked with a range of coaches and players over the summer, working out across the country, including at Loughborough Univeristy. Ogedenbe’s hard work is clearly paying off; with Videos having been uploaded to his instagram account of the Forward scoring 10 three pointers in a row in a workout at Surrey University!
As well as plenty of intense workouts, Tayo took part in British Basketball legend Drew Sullivan’s Testimonial game. Sullivan has become a household name within British basketball, with an illustrious career to show for it.
“Drew’s testimonial was amazing, (it) was a great atmosphere and had a very high standard of players competing.”
“Drew’s career has been filled with trophies and many great personal achievements, it’s great to see as he set a very high standard of success for others also to achieve”
If anyone knows Tayo Ogedengbe, they know he loves his sneakers! I asked Tayo for his thoughts on the controversial ZO’s from ‘Big Baller Brand’, and also on my personal favourites, the PG13’s:
“The PG13’s are awesome. I would recommend them to everyone also because of their price and because their sequel will come with a higher price tag.”
“As for the ZO’s I wasn’t a fan at first, but they have grown on me and I love the fact that they (Big Baller Brand) are challenging the bigger brands and trying to create their own movement…however they are quite pricey”
On the topic of the NBA, the annual London game was announced earlier in August, confirming that the Boston Celtics and the Philadelphia 76ers would be facing off at the O2 arena in January, and Tayo wants to be there!
“I love when the NBA come to London they always do it right and they always do it big, hopefully I will be attending if it doesn’t clash with my season”
This leads swiftly on to Ogedengbe’s goals with the Surrey Scorchers this season. After a brief playoff appearance last term, Tayo is determined to lead the team back to the playoffs, and improve on their league position whilst doing so:
“The goal this year is to definitely improve on last year, (we are) hoping for a top four finish, the finals and silverware”
When I asked Tayo if he had a message for the Scorcher fan base heading in to the new season, the message was crystal clear…keep doing what you’re doing!
“Scorchers fan know from last season that our games are unpredictable, so the message is to keep up that great support that they bring every game!”
