Tyler Stephenson’s Scouting Report

Hitting

Stephenson is a power hitter that has the potential to hit for average. There isn’t much video on Stephenson but it looks like there is an uppercut in his swing, which is something you can expect from a power hitter. He looks like a guy that could hit 30-40 homers a year during his prime. It does look like he tends to swing at a lot of bad pitches and could be a guy that strikeouts 100 plus times a season.

Fielding

Stephenson has a plus glove with a great arm and has been clocked at a solid 1.90, according to Perfect Game.   A major league catcher usually has a pop time under 2.00 seconds.  He still has room to grow and will only get better.

Baserunning

Stephenson has decent speed for a catcher, but I wouldn’t expect many stolen bases from him.

Tyler Stephenson’s Best Fit

Stephenson’s best fit is the Atlanta Braves.  The Braves are known for drafting homegrown talent and Stephenson should be no different.  Brian McCann was the last Georgia catcher that came up through the Braves farm system.
