The Washington Nationals have designated Dan Butler for assignment to make room for Jonathan Papelbon on the 40-man roster, according to Mark Zuckerman of CSNWashington.com.
Butler, 28, was traded to the Nats from the Red Sox in January for Danny Rosenbaum. The catcher has little experience in the big leagues, hitting .211/.250/.368 in 20 plate appearances in 2014 for Boston. Butler has struggled in Triple-A this season with a slash of .231/.315/.312 with one homer and 20 RBIs in 253 plate appearances.
