Catcher Wil Nieves has cleared outright waivers and has elected free agency, according to a report by Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune.
Nieves was designated for assignment last week after the San Diego Padres called up top prospect Austin Hedges. San Diego needed to clear a spot on their roster and Nieves became the odd man out.
Nieves, 37, has spent his whole career as a backup catcher and has a career slash line of .241/.280/.317. He had just 14 plate appearances this season with just one hit, which was a Grand Slam on April 12 agains the Giants.
The Royals, Diamondbacks, Indians, Mariners and Orioles could all be potential landing spots for the veteran catcher.
